Chocolate is a true gift of nature. For some unexplainable reason, cocoa butter melts precisely at 37°C which just so happens to be our body temperature. It’s practically as if chocolate was created for the sheer pleasure of human consumption. I refuse to believe it’s a coincidence

Even if chocolate in Colombia is not exactly re-known, over the past few years it has started expanding its high quality cocoa bean production, putting it on the international map.

Up until 2013, Colombia was actually importing cocoa as the country’s consumption was higher than what they produced.

Now Colombian cocoa production is on the rise, especially since the peace treaty. Little by little, farmers who once used to grow coca are now growing cocoa. Not to mention they are growing some of the finest cocoa on the market.

In the past five years, a growing number of local brands have won international chocolate prizes for their excellent flavors. And as quality cocoa production in neighboring countries such as Ecuador and Venezuela is starting to decline, Colombians have high hopes for the future of Colombian cocoa.

Current scope of chocolate in Colombia

Cocoa is grown practically everywhere in Colombia except for the island of San Andres. The most popular regions that grow cocoa include Sierra Nevada, Huila, Tumaco, Casanare, Arauca and the largest region being Santander.

Of all the cocoa grown in Colombia, 95% of the country’s export is fine cocoa.

As Colombian chocolate is just starting to gain traction and international recognition, perhaps in the very near future it will be able to bring a substantial income for farmers and for the country.
